2008: The Dalai Lama Offers a Free Democratic Vote on Shugden Worship (in Tibetan/བོད་སྐད་དུ)

This subtitled video of the Dalai Lama’s talk on Dolgyal at Drepung Monastery, Mundgod in January, 2008 contains photographic evidence of the Chinese Governments campaign to reshape Tibetan Buddhism in the Chinese mould by eradicating devotion to Guru Rinpoche [latterly a  symbol of the spirit of Tibetan independence] by dismantling and destroying his statues across Tibet. In the video, the Dalai Lama also explains how the Chinese are manipulating public opinion against him by appealing to the ‘religious freedom/human rights’ agenda without explaining the sectarian and bloody history of Shugden worship. Notably, he also offers to resolve the Shugden issue in Indian Tibetan monasteries via an ancient Buddhist monastic method of reaching a democratic decision. The aforementioned monasteries implemented the vote and the outcome was that all decided to adhere to his advice.
